Vietnam stretches a long way from north to south, so choosing the right destinations is important. For a first visit, it helps to think of the country in three parts: North Vietnam, Central Vietnam and South Vietnam.

In the north, Hanoi is a natural starting point. The Old Quarter is full of narrow streets, cafés, markets and small restaurants, while lakes, temples and historic buildings reveal another side of the capital.

From Hanoi, many travellers continue to Halong Bay, one of Vietnam's most recognisable landscapes. Hundreds of limestone formations rise from the water, creating scenery best experienced aboard a cruise. Depending on your itinerary, you can choose between a day excursion or an overnight cruise.

In Central Vietnam, Da Nang combines a modern coastal city with long beaches and easy access to several major attractions. Nearby Hoi An feels completely different. Its historic streets, colourful lanterns, riverside restaurants and old buildings make it one of the most atmospheric stops in Vietnam.

Further south, Ho Chi Minh City introduces travellers to the country's modern, fast-moving side while retaining important reminders of its history. It also serves as a base for excursions towards the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi Tunnels.

With more time, destinations such as Ninh Binh, Sapa, Phu Quoc and Hue can be added depending on the season and the experience you are looking for.

The biggest mistake when planning Vietnam is trying to cover too much of the country in too little time.

Because Vietnam is long and narrow, travelling between the north, centre and south often involves domestic flights. A well-planned itinerary should therefore balance the number of destinations with the amount of time you actually have.

For a shorter trip, you could focus on Hanoi and Halong Bay or combine Da Nang and Hoi An. With around a week, two regions can usually be combined comfortably. Travellers with nine or ten days can consider a broader journey connecting Hanoi, Halong Bay, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.
